Resumen de la conferencia del 2007

Nuestro orador principal fue Marco Antonio Rodríguez, miembro del Concilio Nacional de Discapacidades. En 1996, en México, él tuvo un accidente automovilístico el cual lo dejó sin el uso de sus piernas. Por medio de sus historias las cuales estuvieron llenas de éxitos y desafíos, él dio un mensaje muy importante. Animó a las familias a ser la voz de sus niños, a participar en sus vidas y siempre tener esperanza para un futuro mejor.

A la hora del almuerzo tuvimos rifas; estamos muy agradecidos con los muchos negocios locales que nos donaron los premios. También disfrutamos del entretenimiento de Erick, un carismático niño con Síndrome de Down, quien cantó y bailó para nosotros con energía interminable. Nuestro cuidado de niños, el cual siempre es un reto, se convirtió en un verdadero éxito; pudimos acomodar a más de 40 niños. Tuvimos varios voluntarios que jugaron con entusiasmo con los niños y calmaron a aquellos que lo necesitaban. Los 15 talleres recibieron evaluaciones estupendas. Entre los temas estuvieron: Educación Especial, Integración Sensorial, Liderazgo, Desarrollo del Lenguaje, Abogacía, Transición de adolescente a adulto y Apoyo Familiar. Estamos muy satisfechos de que el registro de padres incrementó este año un 25%. Además tuvimos un aumento en el número de agencias locales en la Feria de Información; ellos entregaron recursos y material importante. El día de la conferencia hubo alrededor de 300 personas.

Gracias a la generosidad de nuestros patrocinadores, pudimos ofrecer varias becas a los padres que no pudieron pagar el registro. Después de todo, nuestro Comité Voluntario de Planificación consideró que su tiempo y esfuerzo valió la pena cada minuto.

Summary of Sacramento Regional Chapter - 2007 Conference:

Our keynote speaker was Marco Antonio Rodriguez, a member of the National Council on Disability. In 1996 he was in an automobile accident in Mexico, which left him without the use of his legs. Through his stories which were filled with successes and challenges, he gave a very important message. He encouraged families to be the voice for their children, to be involved in their lives and to always have hope for a great future.

During the lunch hour we had a wonderful raffle and we are very thankful to the many local businesses who donated the great prizes. We also were entertained by Erick, a delightful child with Down Syndrome, who danced and sang for us with unending energy. Our childcare which is always a challenge, turned out to be a real success; we were able to accommodate over 40 children. We had many volunteers who cheerfully played with the kids and calmed those who needed it. The 15 workshops received wonderful evaluations. Among the topics were: Special Education, Sensory Integration, Leadership, Language Development, Advocacy, the transition from adolescence to adulthood and Family Support. We are very pleased that the parent registrations increased this year by 25%. We also had an increase of the number of local agencies at the information fair; they gave out many important resources and materials. There were almost 300 people in attendance the day of the conference.

Through the generosity of our sponsors, we were able to offer many scholarships to pay the registration fee for parents who could not afford it. All in all, our volunteer planning committee felt that their time and effort was worth every minute!
